Drs. Sam Goldstein and Robert Brooks, building on their earlier writings about resilience and self-discipline, propose the concept of tenacity as the third component of what they call the essential triad of human development. They propose that tenacity is composed of seven instincts, which as the word implies, are present from birth, and over thousands of years have ensured the success and survival of our species. Instincts are not seen as fixed patterns of behavior that lead to a specific outcome such as a bird building a nest, but as an intuitive way of thinking and/or acting. They discuss realistic strategies that parents, teachers, mental health and childcare professionals, and other caregivers can use to nurture resilience in children.
