“Raising a Self Disciplined Child” (typically offered in 80-90 minutes in the evening)

Description: In this presentation Dr. Brooks describes the importance of parents and other caregivers becoming effective disciplinarians.  He highlights three different kinds of disciplinary styles and identifies the style that contributes most to helping children to become increasingly self-disciplined, respectful, responsible, and resilient rather than angry and resentful.  He also emphasizes the importance of assuming a prevention rather than simply an intervention approach to lessen the emergence of counterproductive behaviors in children and adolescents.

“Fostering Family Closeness and Respect” (typically offered in 80-90 minutes in the evening; there is also a half-day and full-day version that overlaps with the “Raising Resilient Children and Adolescents” half-day and full-day presentation)

Description: In this presentation Dr. Brooks describes factors that help families to experience greater warmth and respect. He discusses the importance of (a) practicing empathy in order to understand and respond to each family member, (b) changing “negative scripts,” (c) establishing realistic expectations and goals, (d) becoming a charitable family, (e) disciplining in ways that promote self-discipline rather than resentment, and (f) helping each family member to feel special and appreciated.

"The Power of Mindsets: Creating a Positive School Climate" or "Touching a Student's Mind and Heart: The Mindset of the Effective Educator" or "The Power of Mindsets: Nurturing Motivation, Hope, and Resilience in Children with Special Needs" or "Working with Angry and Resistant Youth: Strategies for Fostering Motivation, Self-Discipline, and Resilience" (these topics have some overlap and are typically offered as a keynote or a half-day or full-day workshop). The presentations pertaining to special needs children and angry children are geared not only for professionals but for parents as well.

Description: Depending on the themes of the presentations, the following are possible topics addressed by Dr. Brooks: (a) the mindset of educators and other professionals who are more effective in teaching and reaching children and adolescents, (b) the importance of empathy in understanding and responding to youngsters, (c) exercises to promote empathy, (d) the lifelong impact that adults have on children and adolescents, (e) the significance of a strength-based approach in which each child's "islands of competence" are identified and reinforced, (f) the components of motivation, (e) the characteristics of the mindset of resilient youth, and (g) specific strategies for reinforcing this mindset in at-risk youth and nurturing motivation, self-discipline, self-dignity, caring, responsibility, hope and resilience. In the workshop about "Angry and Resistant Youth" there is also a section about how professionals and parents can strengthen their own "stress hardiness" so as to be less stressed and more effective in working with or raising challenging youth.
